What is Zhen?

Zhen is an institute devoted to the pursuit of truth and the study of human transformation.

Rooted in Buddhism and Daoism, and informed by contemporary psychology, neuroscience and consciousness research, its work brings ancient practices into direct conversation with the questions of modern life.

Through small-group retreats, research and continued integration, Zhen creates space for people carrying significant responsibility to step outside familiar patterns, see more clearly and explore what meaningful change actually requires.

THE FIVE PATHWAYS

A framework for the whole person

Developed by Chuchu Wang, the Five Pathways form the architecture of every Zhen retreat: Body, Energy, Heart, Mind and Spirit. Each works with a different dimension of experience while remaining part of one integrated process.

What shapes the Zhen approach

The Five Pathways

Body, Energy, Heart, Mind and Spirit form the architecture that shapes every retreat.

Direct Experience

Nothing is asked to be taken on faith. Practices are explored through direct experience and personal observation.

Living Lineage

Rooted in Daoist and Buddhist traditions carried through direct practice and transmission.

Research Informed

Contemporary psychology, neuroscience and consciousness research help inform how the work is understood and refined.

Safety Before Depth

Preparation, screening and careful facilitation create the conditions for deeper work to unfold safely.

Integration Into Life

The work continues beyond the retreat, helping insight become meaningful and lasting change.

Retreats designed to create space

Stepping away from familiar routines can change what becomes possible to notice.

Zhen retreats take place in considered environments around the world, creating the time and space to slow down, work deeply and reconnect with what is often difficult to hear in everyday life.

Chuchu Wang is a 24th-generation lineage holder of Chun Yang Men, the Pure Yang Sect of Daoism, initiated at Wudang Mountain.

Her work brings together Daoist inner alchemy, Theravada Vipassana, Chan and Zen, Tibetan Vajrayana and contemporary approaches to psychology and neuroscience. From this synthesis she developed the Five Pathways framework: Body, Energy, Heart, Mind and Spirit.

She has led more than one hundred multi-day ceremonial retreats across four continents and conducts consciousness research with Dr Tristan Bekinschtein at Cambridge and Dr Joshua Brahinsky at Stanford.

Help make the work possible

Zhen is building work that extends beyond individual retreats, from integration and community to research into how lasting human transformation actually happens. Your support helps make that possible.

Support the work

Make a one-off contribution toward Zhen’s retreats, research and wider mission.

Your contribution supports the practical foundations that make the work possible, from programme delivery and participant support to the continued development of Zhen’s research and educational work.

Zhen Institute is fiscally sponsored by Forward Global, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

Monthly support

Monthly contributions help create continuity across retreats, integration support, research development and the wider community around Zhen.

They allow the work to develop steadily rather than depending only on individual programmes or events. The retreat model itself includes preparation and continued integration rather than treating transformation as a one-off experience.

Common questions

Zhen is founded and led by Chuchu Wang (Chéng Xuān), a 24th-generation lineage holder of Chun Yang Men, the Pure Yang Sect of Daoism, initiated at Wudang Mountain. She has led over a hundred multi-day ceremonial retreats across four continents over 15+ years. This didn’t come out of a certification course. It came out of direct, decades-long training and practice.

Yes. Zhen conducts active research, Human Transformation Dynamics, with Dr. Tristan Bekinschtein at Cambridge and Dr. Joshua Brahinsky at Stanford, studying how lasting transformation actually happens. It’s early-stage and not yet published, but the practices used in retreat are the same ones under study, not separate from the rigor. Zhen is also fiscally sponsored by Forward Global, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

No. Zhen draws on a specific living Daoist lineage and Buddhist traditions, but nothing is asked of you on faith. You’re invited to test what’s offered against your own direct experience.

Zhen works primarily with founders, executives, and others carrying real decision-making weight, people who are outwardly successful but sense that achievement alone hasn’t closed some gap. Zhen also believes healing happens in relationship, and that regardless of where people come from, everyone enters the work as an equal.

Zhen’s retreats are one of the real-world environments informing its research into lasting human transformation. What is learned through practice and observation helps refine the research, while the research in turn helps improve how the retreats are designed.
